English version

Mr. Hawking:

My name is Joaquin Romero, I was born in Barcelona and I’m 45 years old.

As a child I always admired the scientist and person Stephen Hawking, to me he represented one of those heroes that I wanted to imitate when I grew older.

It always caught my attention that a scientist could also get sick one day, I could not imagine that something like this could happen.

From the very beginning, I was surprised by your tenacity and desire to excel, your fight for life despite your limitations.

Twenty three years ago, I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, at that time I already had planned my future career as a technical architect, with the hope of leading works from the scaffolding.

As the disease was progressing, my limitations were growing as well, so I decided together with my brother Borja, a telecommunications engineer, to adapt my home in order to increase my autonomy.

Those were difficult times where we realized that in Spain did not exist companies specialized in providing autonomy to people with disabilities. For this reason, we decided to join our knowledge and with the initials of our own names, founded the company BJ Adaptaciones, which provides autonomy to people with disabilities, through the use of technology.

Despite technological advances, what has really given an impulse to my life as I have been deteriorating, is the faith that I received from my parents, and to believe that after this life I will be able to enjoy God without having to go through the pain as I do right now.

While waiting for that moment to come, I can count with his strength, his company, his hope, which is the fuel that makes me be able to drive my life.

I find it difficult to transmit the importance of all this, nevertheless in the book "An unexpected guest" I tried to explain the way I can live with my illness. I suggest that you also read the book and try to find out by yourself what I’m trying to say.

I was surprised when I read a recent article of yours, where you support assisted suicide. I always thought you were a defender of life, after so many years living with your illness. You are an example that life is worth living as one is.

For people that have know you the way I do, it is hard to believe that during all these years that you have struggled to live, you now support that others take away their own lives.

My parents taught me that I should never forget the importance of making life pleasant for others, as Jesus proclaimed.

I consider that pain is a treasure, as it has been able to remind me something so fundamental, in spite of my circumstances.

For this reason man differs substantially from any other living being.

I would like to talk about these topics with you, I can provide you my e- mail address: joaquin.romero@bj-adaptaciones.com

Warm regards,

Joaquín Romero Salord

La respuesta

Thank you for your email to Professor Hawking.

As you can imagine, Prof. Hawking receives many such every day.  He very much regrets that due to the severe limitations he works under, and the enormous number of requests he receives, he is unable to compose a reply to every message, and we do not have the resources to deal with many of the specific scientific enquiries and theories we receive.

Please see the website for more information about Professor Hawking, his life and his work.

Yours faithfully
